Yudelkis Contreras
Goyang, South Korea. The Dominican Yudelkis Contreras earned a fourth place in the World Weightlifting Championships to be held since the last day 19 in this South Korean city to 29 this month.
Contreras confirmed his status as world-class athlete in the 53 kg category. The 23 year old Dominican had a performance above expectations considering that it was his first competition since last August, when he finished fifth in the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Contreras, from San Pedro de Macoris, made full marks of 202 kilos lifted in competition, winning Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan, with 219 kilos, to finish fifth in starting with 90 and lead the specialty of the two times (or shove clean & jerk) with a lump of 129.
Yudelkis competition began with a weight of 88 kilos in this specialty and finished fourth with 91, behind leader Chen Xiaoting, China, who scored 95, the Korean Yoon Jin-Hee, second with 93 and Svetlana Heremshanova, of Kazakhstan, with 92 kilos. The Dominican missed a third attempt to start trying to lift 92 kilos.
The quisqueyana tried to compensate in clean & jerk (clean and jerk) to try to get into the medals, but their total maximum of 111 kilos was not enough for the podium. This test began with 106 kilos, then scored 111 and finally could not complete a third and final attempt of 114.
